STAR WARS EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE
PART 2 - SWAMPS OF NABOO
Qui-Gon Jinn has landed on the planet Naboo. As he flees from the droids through the swamps of Naboo, he ran into a local named Jar Jar Binks and saved him from the droids crashing though the woods. By demands of Jar Jar's gods, he must serve a life dept to any who saves his life. While Qui-Gon waits for his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, he sends Jar Jar to help find him. Obi-Wan Kenobi now lands on the planet in search for his master....
Jar Jar Binks will lead you to Qui-Gon Jinn throughout the scenario. What you have to do is battle Trade Federation droids through the swamps of Naboo and search for supply boxes that contain Health Continers in them, but some contain Destroyer Droids in them so be careful. Make sure you save at the save points. And read the Intellegence section, you might need it to better understand how to get past a part near the end.
This scenario is one of the scenarios that will go with a Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace campaign I may make later. If you played the game The Phantom Menace, this is sorta simular to the second level.

The Swamps of Naboo is a very well made scenario in general. It was a little weak in some areas at some point in the scenario, but generally it was very well made.
Playability:
Very well done. I played the scenario twice (more or less had to, because an unexpected bug that resulted because of my impatience caused the scenario to stop) and found new things about the scenario each time. Replaybility is key when it comes to playability, so I commend The Vampire Slayer for a job well done in this area. Expect to experience the adventure that the Jedi Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi experienced in jungles of Naboo in the movie Star Wars - Episode I: The Phantom Menance.
Balance:
Balance was a little weak for the most part. Except for one part where you have to traut through a heavily loaded Trade Federation base, you will find it very easy to defeat any enemy you see on your way. I guess this can be blamed on the fact that I played it on "easy", so I didn't take too much marks off. Generally the scenario provided little frustration and the intricate maze-like paths in the jungle were especially interesting to explore.
Creativity:
This aspect is sort of borderlined. The scenario is obviously based on the movie "Star Wars - Episode I: The Phantom Menace", so there is no creativity in the story. But many aspects, such as the healing boxes and the follow trigger trick are newly introduced in SWGB (although have been used numerous times in AOK) and even the fact that it's an RPG scenario. So in a way it's a "pioneer". So again, not too much marks are taken off. Just be more creative with the storyline.
Map Design:
Fantastic. No doubt that this aspect is a full 5. The mingled jungle terrain, the eyecandy, the realistic swamps, and the many cutscenes in the scenario provided a feast for the eyes. Bravo Zulu to Vampire Slayer for continuing the fine tradition of eyecandy started in AOK in SWGB.
Story/Instructions:
Like previously mentioned, the scenario is based on The Phantom Menace. Because it is based on such a popular movie, it assumes you know the story already. That is NEVER the case. There is always somebody who fits out of the obvious. Given a sobre eye's look at the scenario, the story is not very well communicated. The instructions, however, were ample. The initial objectives screen tells you plenty of information, and in-game instructions helped alot too. So overall, the story needs more work and the instructions, although can still be improved, worked out nicely.
+ Points
- Very fun to play
- Succeeded in using AOK editor tricks in SWGB
- Excellent map design
- Points
- Balance need to be tweeked
- Story need a little more work for those who didn't see the movie or read the book
Final Thoughts: Overall this scenario (or campaign, it's the same difference) is very well done, and certainly marked the beginning of a glorious era of fine scenarios and campaigns in SWGB. I certainly would like to see the rest of the campaign completed. But like I mentioned earlier, the story need to be told in a fashion that it accomodates those who didn't know it already.

I just thought I'd point out that its "Part 2". So for now it will leave you in the dark about the characters if you never saw the movie, but they are to be introduced in "Part 1" of the campaign. I just felt like making part 2 first. ;-)
And when choosing a difficulty... If you choose easy, expect the game to be real easy. I'd only recomend playing it on easy if your new to the game and aren't very skilled at all. I'd recomend everyone to play it on Moderate, the balance of the game is mostly based on moderate difficulty. Now if you choose Hard, I suggest to not spend your time attacking droids, cause you'll never win. Playing on hard is a real challenge and your best off to flee from all the Trooper droids. The Trade Federation will end up sending all the units in the area to hunt you down once a droid spots you, so you don't want to stick around fighting them all. ;-)
I also updated the scenario and fixed some problems that occured when playing on hard that made it nearly impossible to win. |

Great scenario! I played it and it was great fun. This scenario comes across very professional (even more so than the official campaign). Several times I wondered 'How the hell did he do that'. (as opposed to the official campaign, which are good, but pretty easy to reproduce yourself).
PLAYABILITY-5
Fun to play, that's all I can say. No bugs in this scenario. It's also nice to control a single unit instead of jugling an entire army.
BALANCE-4
I played this scenario on moderate difficulty, and for the most part it wasn't very hard. You play as Obi-Wan Kenobi, and sometimes it can be a little anoying to attack troopers with a melee unit, since they tend to run away. If they troopers were on stand ground, it would be a little less frustrating, but perhaps a bit to easy. The last part where you have to sneak through a federation base is very hard, but it can be done.
CREATIVITY-5
Fun, unlike anything I had seen before. It's about a part of Episode I that didn't appear in the movie. The way it was executed was also original.
MAP DESIGN-5
Astonishing beautiful map. The maker of this map was very succesfull in creating the swamp surroundings. The ambient sounds works very well in this scenario. Very creative use of eye-candy.
STORY/INSTUCTIONS-5
Nothing wrong here either. The pre-game instructions are allright. But the in-game cutscenes were amazing! The movie dialogue at the end was fun. Too bad about the two spelling mistakes in Obi-Wan's last sentence, the rest was perfect.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the campaign |

Thanks for your review James Martigo. :-)
Here's my comments on your review:

Yep, It would be to easy if they stood still. I based the balance on the fact that they do run away. But if you play on easy, they don't run away as much and that's what makes the easy level very easy.
"The last part where you have to sneak through a federation base is very hard, but it can be done."
The trade Federation base is sorta a surprise to the player. The only extra tips I have for people is to be quick and try to collect Supply Boxes that are in the open and not in groups. I expected trial and error to be a key to playing that part, so make sure you save! |
