All right, I feel inspired to attempt to start another Star Wars roleplay, because I have been reminded that I still haven’t really roleplayed with some of my favorite people on the internet, as well as just missing the old play-by-post form.
And instead of looking for someone else to RM because I’m too scared to do it myself . . . I’m going to do it myself. Shocking, I know. I haven’t met a RM as stubborn as me when it comes to keeping an RP alive yet, so there’s at least one positive.
About the RP. Going to stick to play-by-post. It’s been done here in the past and a number of us clearly have plenty of experience using that form. Also probably purely text and no mechanics. While I like to use mechanics for at least combat, as combat can get really messy in text, so long as we can keep in mind that there are others that deserve time to shine, we’ll be fine (and I’m pretty sure you guys can do this without me saying anything anyway). That and, I have no open-source resources for an official system, and making up my own and expecting you guys to put up with it seems pretty mean.
I’m also far more partial to small scale stories about individuals, so that is certainly what I would be setting up. As opposed to usual tabletop systems, I’m fine with people playing multiple characters, just not major political or military figures that would force me to figure out an enormous degree of cause and effect. Also, your characters become much less likely to meet each other that way, which I think is kind of sad.
Finally, I’m most likely to stick with Legends galactic civil war for the time period, but could be persuaded to adjust to the clone wars or KotOR I and II era. I will be mostly working with broad strokes though, because I haven't read all ten thousand or so Star Wars stories. Secondly, I’m come to find in my experience that it’s best for me to write out a sort of prompt telling everyone in vague terms what the situation to get involved in is, so that players can create characters that would actually get involved, and can start off by roleplaying how they get involved without requiring a lot of guesswork on the part of both RM and player.
And I’m going to go work on that . . . hopefully enough of you want to give this a shot to be worth it.
Edit:
Prompt/premise:
Rantell is a mid-rim world that could be mistaken for an outer-rim system. Often ignored in large-scale galactic politics and economy due to having no interesting features or rare resources, Rantell seems to be spared the effects of the wider civil war. A temperate world with multiple biomes and a population of only a billion it manages to be fairly self-sufficient, though many will leave the planet hoping to find better fortunes elsewhere.
Recently, however, vague rumors have begun circulating of a strange discovery on the planet. Too vague for many to act on for some time, a sudden increase in traffic toward the planet alarms many criminal factions, who send their own agents to investigate, leading, in turn, Imperial and then Rebel agents to investigate just what is responsible for the increasing activity on Rantell. Only a few days ago, a sudden, violent incident involved members of the local criminal gangs and the Black Sun did incredible damage to seemingly insignificant droid labor plant in the trade city of Gallant Nash. With the Black Sun, other factions’ interest has risen significantly, as well as less organized mercenaries or wanderers in the area.
Going by the local news, a handful alleged of Black Sun agents had attacked and killed all known members of the Lower Bank gang at the Easywork droid plant (not a previously suspected hideout, notably), and the three surviving agents were arrested after an explosion alerted the local authorities and they arrived in force. The authorities are currently seeking a “Marv Kani”, a zabrak male who has been missing since the incident and is believed to be connected.
