Battle For Naboo - Escape from Theed
by obi wan
BFN is obi wan's first scenario, and let me tell you that you wouldn't say that just by playing it. True, he still has a lot to learn, but this is certainly a good introduction.
I'll get right to the point.
PLAYABILITY - 3
I gave playability a 3, because the scenario isn't quite fascinating enough to keep the players attention... shortcomings in the other categories are the main reason playability is only avaerage. The pluspoints to playability is that there were no bugs. And the scenario featured the complex AI healing trick, which isn't something you would expect from a new designer. Two thums up to obi wan for making it work, and without bugs.
BALANCE - 3
The major downfall in the balance category, is that the hero doesn't have enough attack... The 'hero' is a strike mech, and shooting down 200 HP Mech Destroyers is not fun when you're only doing 7 damage per shot. Not that shooting down 85 HP droideka's is much fun.
What is admirable, is the tension added by having to protect another unit (Captain Keal)... When you destroy the units attacking him, hoping to get a rest, he just speeds towards more enemies, adding some difficulty. If you like excitement, and a challenge, you'll like this part. I would have liked it better though if Keal would have also been healed when you use your healing.
CREATIVITY - 3
Unfortunately, Escape From Theed had little to distinguish it. Map design like the official SWGB Naboo levels. No deep story, with twists and revelations. No new gameplay, or gameplay features. No new trigger tricks. What did raise the score, are the way the streets seem to form a maze, forcing you along the stranges routes if you want to get from one point of town to the other. I also liked the zoo, and park. And the some of the healthpacks were very well hidden.
MAP DESIGN - 4
Well, the good news is that obi wan knows that eyecandy is important. The bad news is that he still has to learn to pace himself. Here you have certain small places which are littered with eyecandy, which can look beautiful, but overdone at times. And elsewhere there is no eyecandy at all, making it very plain. The city of Theed is difficult to make. This map tries to do it the way LucasArts did it. And obi wan failed in this, just like LucasArts failed. Fortunately he was wise enough to add interesting places, like the zoo, park, walkway over water, big boulevards. Map design has a lot of room for improvement... it's either a high 3, or a low 4. I'm gonna give obi wan the benefit of the doubt this time.
STORY/INSTRUCTIONS - 4
The History and Intelligence section were well written. Even if it was copied from elsewhere, it gave good background information. But the other instructions and objectives were a bit too short. The story wasn't very original, or exiting. I didn't catch any spelling errors. This is another score dangling between 3 and 4. I'm gonna give it a 4 now, but I hope obi wan tries to add some more story to later missions.
Overall : 3.4
When you're playing Escape From Theed, you'll see a designers first steps... and this designer decided to skip crawling all together. Playing through Battle For Naboo will be like living someone's learning process. Good job obi wan, and I think we can expect great things from later campaigns by you, once the design skills start to sink in.
