Even as the Allied forces begin to get a foothold at the beach, an officer is ordered to take his squad behind enemy lines on a dangerous mission to find and retrieve one man: Private James Ryan.
The youngest of four brothers, Ryan is the last survivor, the other three having all been killed in action within days of one another.

'Saving Private Ryan' is a lengthy Fixed-Force scenario very loosely based on the film of the same name. You control a platoon of units on a mission to find the titular Private Ryan.

The title and premise put me off, but this scenario is surprisingly fun and challenging, even if the pacing is very slow. You will slowly advance through 'Normandy' fighting pockets of enemy forces. Occasionally you will find areas that are being saturated with artillery fire. Navigating these areas requires a lot of caution and patience; any unit hit by a blast dies instantly.

Personally, I thought that system was very interesting. Getting lazy or impatient while maneuvering your units could mean having a good chunk of them wiped out. You're forced to slowly leapfrog your units a few at a time to avoid taking too many losses. For me, this did add to the authenticity of the scenario, as the motions did kind of mimic how actual troops would move in a combat situation.

However, I can see people become frustrated or impatient with it, especially late in the scenario, or if you screw up and a powerful unit gets destroyed.

Balance: 4
Very challenging. Advancing recklessly means your units can be easily thinned out by the aforementioned artillery, or picked off by turrets, both of which are much more challenging to deal with than the actual enemy troops/mechs strewn across the map.

The best way to advance without too many losses is to crawl your way up the map, having your Mounted Troopers scout ahead. You are given a cannon about half-way through the scenario, which makes dealing with turrets much easier.

Creativity: 3
It's a very neat scenario, but it bears little to no resemblance to its namesake, and I'm kinda questioning why that title was attached to it. The unit composition given to you is pretty odd. You have AT-STs and AT-ATs in your mostly rebel assault force. You'd think the author would opt to use the treaded/wheeled Rebel mechs that look at least a little bit more 'Earth-like.'

Map Design: 5
A very good looking map. It looks dirty and war-torn without becoming difficult for your army to navigate. The only real tight spots are the small funnels being hit with artillery fire that you must traverse. You travel through wrecked towns, scorched woods, and open bombed-out wasteland, and each one looks as it should. Great job.

Story/Instructions: 2
The biggest downside to this is the disconnect between the film and this scenario. Aside from what I assume to be a very basic interpretation of the Normandy beach landings, none of the scenes from the film are depicted, and there's no real reason for the Saving Private Ryan title, other than for the very ending of the scenario. But I think the scenario could have benefited more had it just been a simple 'Rebel VS Empire' story.

There is also very little dialog except for when you locate reinforcements. All of the briefing menus besides your objectives are left blank.

Additional Comments:
It's not a very good interpretation of the film, even by SWGB's standards. But you may still have some fun with it. I think it's certainly worth a shot.
