Peninsulas is a geographically unique map script that has the players starting out on exposed peninsulas that jut out into a central sea. There can be pretty wild land or sea action and different strategy options. The starting positions are a little vulnerable to sea attack, and a good early attack could completely block off land escape by guarding across the enemy's peninsula. Resources are pretty standard, with randomized food types and amounts, including randomized levels of fish! Forests on the starting peninsulas are small to prevent overcrowding there, but there is plenty of forest on the mainland of the map. There is a unique 'highland' effect of high elevation around the periphery of the map, so the central starting areas and sea are kind of in a bowl-shaped depression. It is possible to use the highlands defensively, as elevation does effect ranged attacks. There are a variety of randomized terrain patterns, including green and brown bases, a variety of forest types, snow and desert.
Crowding players onto a too-small sized map can really mess this up, because there must not only be enough room for the players bases, but also for even sized channels between them. It looks and works best played on a map size appropriate to the number of players. Note that on a 1v1 game the players often do not start out on much of a peninsula, as the effect is sometimes lost.

Updated 4/28/02 to eliminate the 'Gungan bug' which could place very large fish on the Gungan CCs.
