[G]Holocron Island by RF_Gandalf

Your long range interstellar scout ships had reported the discovery of this inhabitable planet with a few strange ruins. Sensors picked up unusual, unexplained signals from the lone island in the center of the sea, which might be the sign of something quite valuable. As you prepare to start your new colony on the planet, you notice that enemies are preparing to do the same. You must be the first one to reach this mysterious island to see if there is some ancient wisdom here that can help your civ be the one to repel your enemies and to control this island.

Holocron Island is a new random map script for SWBG which tries to focus on different strategies for winning. This map has only a very limited supply of nova at each starting base, but a large number (10 per player) of Holocrons all located on an island in the center of the sea. The usable land is around the periphery, like in the Sea or Large Sea maps. The central island is made up of the swamp terrain, so that the first to the island cannot just build turrets to keep others away. Each player starts with the standard units plus one Jedi Temple, one Jedi Padawan (or Sith Apprentice), and one Prefab Shelter to keep you from being 'housed' at the start.

The strategic decisions involve whether to try to reach T2 first to get a transport ship to take your Jedi to the island to start on the Holocron collection, or to do a more usual T1 or T2 rush to gain an advantage that way, then worry about the Holocrons later. Do you build up a navy to gain advantage over the island? Do you wait for T3 to use an air transport and air power? Do you ignore the Holocrons and focus on military dominance with non-nova units, but run the risk of your opponent gaining the economic upper hand by controlling these nova-generators? Can you focus on trading to gain enough nova? This map makes a great team game, with multiple ways to split up these goals and responsibilities.

In testing, the computer player never seems to go after the Holocrons here like on an all-land map, even though it frequently has utility trawlers exploring over the island quite early, so this map is probably best for a multiplayer game.

Updated 4/28/02 to eliminate the 'Gungan bug' which could place very large fish on the Gungan CCs.

I have played this map before. Although it may be hard to do so, I think the most fun use of this map is to get 5+ players and capture all of the holocrons. Challenging, but fun :)

Additional Comments:
Nicely done.
