The RPG Calendar

Announcements

The RPG Calendar is closing down. Thanks for the good times guys.

DarkBeing and Melkor have completed their Fanfic based on the legendary Advent of Darkness RPG: The Advent of Darkness FanFiction

DarkBeing's Legacy: The History of the SWU RPG

FoO presents the Calendar's first offical, and rather silly, awards ceremony. It is now over, but I'll leave this here so you can chack out the winners if you missed it. Go on, have a look'see...

WARNING: Exam Season, RPGs may move slowly.

What is the Calendar? How does it work?

The Calendar is basically a floodgate. It is here to stop tirades of RPG's flooding the forum, then dieing, then there being a period where no RPG's exist.

To this end the calendar exists. When you come up with an RPG idea you submit it, then when enough have said that they're interested you go on the waiting list until there is a slot and then the RPG can begin!

How do I submit my RPG?

To submit an RPG to the community fill in this simple form

RPG Name: (The title of your RPG)
Moderator: (Your forum name)
Plot: (The plot for your RPG, this could be your title crawl)
Character/Faction Based: (Just put down character, faction or either if you haven't decided)
Number of people interested: (I'll fill this in as we go along. This field will be deleted when your RPG has reached 5 people)

Are there any rules?

Yes, these rules are not subject to change, but most are common sense anyway

-Follow the CoC, no spam, flaming, baiting etc.

-Constructive criticism only, don't just say 'I hate your idea', say how to improve it

-Don't just ignore the calendar, it's here for a reason

-Keep it friendly, and say if you're interested

-If you have a problem contact me, my email is friend_of_old@hotmail.co.uk

-To make things easier to run here I have introduced a colour coding system for important posts
Type RPG Idea... in Bold Red if you are submitting an idea
Type Interested in... in Bold Lime if you are interested in an idea
Type Update for... in Bold Orange if you want me to update something on the main post
Type Probation for... in Bold Yellow if you want me to put someone on the probation list (I will ask for reasons)

How many...

Yes there are limits to things:

-There will only be 5 RPG's at a time

-You need 5 people to be interested in your RPG for it to go forward

-You can have up to 3 RPG ideas at a time

-You can moderate 1 RPG at a time

RPG Name: A New Empire Part 2
Moderator: Gorog
Plot:
Two years have passed since the Battle of Endor. Imperial commanders and Moffs break away from High Command on Coruscant, while the remaining loyalists struggle to keep the forces of the Alliance of Free Planets at bay. However, while having a wide base of support, the former Rebellion lacks the military resources to take Coruscant.

In a surprise move, Alliance and Imperial leaders meet on the planet ITHOR. Drawing up a peace treaty, the delegates decide on a new government, transforming the Empire into a constitutional monarchy with the reinstatement of the IMPERIAL SENATE, led by a President appointed by the figurehead Emperor who has been elected by the Grand Moffs. MON MOTHMA is soon appointed to the post of President of the Imperial Senate.

However, some former Rebels refuse to recognize the Treaty of Ithor, and accuse Mon Mothma of having sold out the ideals of the Rebellion to assume control of the galaxy. These Rebels maintain arms in order to establish a true Republic. Similarly, some Imperial worlds denounce what they call a false Empire, and instead aid the Imperial warlords. As the new Empire and its Senate try to establish authority, the Galactic Civil War enters a new phase, manipulated by shadowy individuals with their own agenda...
Character/Faction Based: Character

RPG Name: Age of the Warlords
Moderator: FoO
Plot:
[c]After the disasterous failure of Palpatine's attempted formation of a unified Galactic Empire the Republic collapsed and the galaxy fell into ten years of darkness. Now three factions, the Thyferran Alliance, the Grand Directorate and the Azure Imperium have arisen and vy for control of the core worlds, using battered fleets with ancient clone wars ships and cheap cruisers, a shadow of the galaxy's former glory.

Over all of this the Church of Truth holds sway, binding the planets of the galaxy under its vicious doctorine. However one team of Directorate scientists on Kuat dare to defy them. In an attempt to create the ultimate weapon they unleash the ultimate sin, they unleash the Force.

Character/Faction Based: Character, with mnior fleet details

RPGs to be Approved

Moderators

I've decided to add this section so that people can see at a glance if their favourite moderators or friends are planning an RPG at a glance, or if they're on the probation list. Thus I'm assigning everyone a colour, if you'd prefer a different colour don't hesitate to ask.

Probation List

This is where a list of people and their crimes are put. If you are on this list it means something you have done has been deemed counter-productive to an RPG or the RPG community. Being on this list does not stop you creating RPG's through the calendar or playing in them. It is here to warn people of what you have done, so that if they don't want to run the risk of you messing something up half-way through.

Crimes include things like godmodding, flaming, spamming, quitting for no valid reason, etc. Basically anything that harms an RPG.

Darth Kiev: For abandoning ANE without reason, causing death of the RPG.

I assume you guys will want the silly X-Wing Alliance logic for space combat, too.

...Err, as in the "space = air and therefore the notion of absolute speed exists and is markedly lower than that encountered in proper space travel" rather than "fighters can casually dispatch capital ship squadrons" logic. Even if it means orbital mechanics become meaningless...

Eh... my issue is more one of pacing in battles. Little physical quirks and peculiarities are shrugged off.

But the issue is more along the lines of "how long should it take a fighter to go from its carrier, freshly-decanted from hyper, to the enemy fortifications"? Or even something as simple as, "How much time should it have to strafe a Star Destroyer?" When two capital ships spot each other, is it a frantic scramble to prepare for combat before the guns are in range... or is there time to prepare, give the crew one last hot meal and a shot of grog, and then sail forth into the fray for honor and glory?

Probably a smaller faction. Something that's regionally significant but in the bigger picture is more of a thorn in the flesh of the major factions than a true threat. I have something of an underdog syndrome. Force adept is likely, probably something rather unorthodox and with self-imposed limitations. Like the Fallanassi but not, because I've played enough of those at this point.

I'd be interested if you need somebody to take a character.

I'm not at all interested in space battles any more, but if you have general plot-lines and character/story development to follow, I'd definitely be aboard.

This game started out with two major goals:
1) Fulfill my needs to redesign the whole SW universe with cool ships.
2) The plot explicitly revolved around a certain character... a Skywalker, specifically.

However, the player for that Skywalker wanted nothing to do with the character (the thinking was a kind of apology for some things happened to the latest adaptation of the character) and so... yeah. Having Darth Sean hunt the lasht Shkywalkah washn't--ahem, wasn't going to happen. And doing SWVII has fulfilled and exceeded that first need. Sometimes agonizingly so (God. Damn. CEC.).

Fortunately, I've come with a few additional character ideas for the RPG (in the last five or six years...), and I am, at heart, a character writer. I just really like sticking them into giant battles. And I kinda view factions as characters in their own right... if a touch more regulated because I'm still pretty sure sixteen battle squadrons can impact more stuff than a single, middling Jedi character. I know, heresy... but I think my apostasy with respect to the Holy Canon is fairly well-known. <_<

So yes, there's loads of room for character development. And for pushing fleets around galaxy maps and armies around planetary maps. And yes, those two can be joined.

Meh.. I like the Zahn style of storytelling myself. Big battles do occur, but they are only told through a characters's scope of them. And most the relevant aspects of the battles are explained or explored, if they even are at all.

Stackpole's style is fine (I've always enjoyed his starfighter combat descriptions), but he never had massive battles and had the traditional few capital ships on either side and tons of starfighter squadrons. His scopes were again from the main character's perspectives, with a few brief overviews of the rest of the battle.

You mentioned once that RPG battles had to be either calculated neutrally or a carefully choreographed dance, and I agree with that assessment and class myself as the latter.

I recognize now that my problem with my RPGing here was that I was trying to force my storylines on other people, even in the big fleet battles. Having everything go my way just because I think I'm writing a good story is wrong for this format, and led to a lot of conflict with other RPers, all good people. Knowing this now I try to stay out of them and focus on my own characters, and to make my own storylines in a way either not affect or be affected by others.

So frankly if I was forced to include battles into my stories, and forced to change my storylines as a result of their outcomes, I'd best stay out and save everyone the headache.

That's a cardinal rule of all of my RPGs: no other player can simply control yours on a whim. It's one thing if people role-play out a scene (so to speak) on an IM or something, then write up a post with back-and-forth dialog. It's entirely another to put words or actions into a character that is not your own.

Hell, I'm so an... ah, zealous in the pursuit of this ideal that I even extend it to certain NPCs (you can't make the Imperial navy trooper just let you out of the cell, or clear yourself to land on Byss with your cargo of six Rebel Army Divisions, etc.).

Well, that's where it can get complicated. Personally, I devolve it to faction leaders... who can in turn designate people. So, say you have a Grand Moff for some oversector, and the Imperial faction leader asks the player to handle things like that for their area of control.

But some people don't like that. As long as things aren't stupid, I'm okay with whatever they're comfortable with.

Still seeking clarification on that pacing issue... since that will control speeds and ranges for combat, detection... which in turn plays into how close you have to be to launch your fighters so they don't exhaust their air and fuel before they meet the enemy...

So many interlocking things, hanging on just a simple question....

And if anyone balks about it being too complicated and statistical, it also plays into the narrative, too. So even if battles are strictly done by roleplay and OOC cooperation... well, it still helps to have a feel, no?

EDIT: Also, I still have to write about nine hundred years of history... and I've already wiped out the Alliance, conquered then freed Naboo, had two more Sith-Imperial wars and two succession crises...

No...

We're not Saxtoning this up. Guns don't span the orbits of habitable planets. <_<

Besides, this is still an SW game. So physical reality means whatever the hell is convenient for the writer and doesn't exceed his or her education. Unfortunately, you have me as a GM, so going by those criteria only means Newtonian space and vector arithmetic. But that might slow things down a bit, so... >_>

...Oh, speaking of which, I read my very first Honorverse Zahn last night. And it's Captain Elayne Sandler (RMN) who get the "blue person" prize.
