Yeah, but we're talking the franchise that not only bowdlerized a term for testicles... it then "lessened" the meaning to roughly "ass" or "butt" or "hide." The idea that the canonical characters are not in fact a bunch of Barbie and Ken dolls in their nether regions--which I suppose they haven't, actually... only space slugs have testes atm--is still likely heretical.

I know someone's going to take this as sacrilege because Dooku was played by Chris Lee... but Dooku is very nearly as thin and weak a character as Maul... at least on paper. He's a bad guy... but here's a twist; he used to be a Jedi! Whereas Maul is just there because we didn't want Palpatine to have a lightsaber duel. Yet.

So, even Khan from Into Darkness--watered and dumbed down as he was--still had a degree of depth and complexity that, well, just about everyone in the PT lacked... but especially the villains.

Maul would be the saddest excuse for a villain ever if it weren't for Bandon, Grievous, and probably some other stupid ideas spawned by TCW that I spared myself from. Dooku...could have been a good villain hypothetically, and not just because he was played by Christopher Lee. The potential is there in Dooku's backstory for him to be the kind of morally ambiguous--indeed, self-righteous--villain that Star Wars has always lacked. But by the time TCW got through with him, he was just another "MWAHAHAHA EVILLLLLL" villain, and nothing else bothered to flesh out the original concept any further.

Up until EP III came out, Grievous was actually pretty cool. RotS killed him. TCW just put him in the ground.

I actually thought Grievous was the shining spot of Episode 3. It might just be because I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, but both him and Dooku were a ton of fun, and their action scenes were suitably epic.

My only experience with Grievous is RotS and TCW, but I thought he was pretty much the most sucktastic villain conceivable short of "strong-and-silent" Maul and "wax-paper-has-more-depth-than-me" Bandon. All of his lines were stupid, he spent way too much time monologuing without any real skill to justify it, and he runs away at the first sign of a padawan despite claiming to be a Jedi killer. I'm aware he allegedly lives up to his reputation in the original cartoon, but like I said, I haven't seen that.

The original cartoon, and the Clone Wars comics.

In the cartoon he engages six Jedi at once. Killing two of them, and nearly killing three. Not to mention the Jedi master he killed before fighting those six. Then at the end, when the Battle of Coruscant is going, he goes to capture Palpatine. Fighting three Jedi there, killing two of them. Then he was going to fight Mace until the latter crushed Grievous' chest forcing him to flee.

Then, in the comics, there was the killing of two or three other Jedi on Boz Pity, one of them being Adi Gallia. He was certainly no pushover until the movie and then that abomination of a TV show.

EDIT:

You know what? Here.

Now you've seen a better version.

When did Star Wars EVER have in-depth villains, though? SW villains are all about being cool.

If we take the OT, did Vader really have any depth to him? Not until RotJ (or, arguably, the end of ESB) when he was on his way to becoming a not-villain. All he had going for him before was a bad-ass look and being a constant menace to everybody, including his own people (cause of his 'take no shit' attitude). There was no depth, he was just freakin' cool.

Palpatine? A one-dimensional 'yeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssss, doooooooo eviiiiiiiilllll stuuuuuf' kind of guy in Ep6, who ruined his master-plan of turning Luke to the Dark Side by his own talking I would argue that PT actually fleshed him out at least as a mastermind.

Maul didn't have any lines or character, but he was cool as **** Pretty much the Boba Fett of PT.

And Dooku, respectively, classy as ****. Though to be honest Chris Lee's performance does give a hint of 'something more behind the curtains', it's just that we never get to see that.

EDIT: Also, my memory of the ST:TOS and WoK Khan is a bit fuzzy, but I don't feel the ID Khan is watered down in comparison (again, from what I remember of Montaban's Khan).

Again, any and all "class" come solely from Chris Lee. Unless, I dunno, contrasting shorter hair and a neatly-trimmed beard to Qui-Gon's "Jedi hippie" look counts.

Again, just talking the films. None of the Dooku stuff from the ROTS novelization or films, the background information about how expensive his clothes are and stuff... at most, he has his "Then I'm sorry, old friend..." but even that's complete bull when you get down to it. <_<

And you're right about Palpatine; he's the only thing remotely improved by the PT. And even then, in Jedi, he just appears to be a sick, helpless old man who can't even manipulate people really well... then promptly fries Luke half to death when he gets annoyed. >_>

So? Film's a visual medium, it's not only about the script and the text. Take ANH in a text form, and Vader (who incredibly became iconic) is the most generic villain one can imagine. It's David Prowse's phisique in that cool designed costume with James Earl Jones' voice that made the character. The character's most iconic lines, btw, are from ESB where they kinda written with all that perfomance in mind, and even then Vader as a character is pretty one-dimensional.

Dooku is very similar to original Vader in that regards (only muss less prominent in the picture). It's a shame that they didn't actually explore his potential (including trying to destroy the beast from within its belly, for example, which could've been a very nice concept), but he's still cool nonetheless. And, as I said, that's what all Star Wars villains have been (at least for the most part) about anyway

This is what frustrates me about Dooku. Having a very talented actor play an utterly flat character allowed the actor to give a tiny bit of depth to the character, but that depth is never explored. Incidentally, this is what I feel about the few well-acted characters in Voyager, too.

Since I quoted it on your link at FB, I might as well quote it here.
But of course in the prequels, we see that eternally prepubescent voice of Anakin Skywalker gets injected with a full dose of James Earl Jones after a well-deserved lava bath in Revenge of the Sith. This was such an improvement to the character that we kind of wonder why Jake Lloyd didn't immediately fling himself into lava the moment he appeared on screen in Episode I.
This is the absolute truth.
