Welcome to Expanding Fronts
Star Wars Galactic battlegrounds: Expanding Fronts is a massive fan-made expansion that brings countless new units, gameplay features, and quality of life improvements to the classic LucasArts strategy game.

New Features

  • New Civilizations! Do battle with four entirely new playable civilizations; the Zann Consortium, Geonosians, First Order, and Resistance. Each new faction is fully realized with a unique graphics set, as well as a competitive roster of new unique units and technologies.

  • New Units and Techs! The standard unit and tech tree roster of each civ has been enhanced with numerous new units and technologies. Use Transport Mechs to ferry infantry into battle; dominate the skies with the Interceptor; annihilate coastal defenses with Monitor ships; and much more!

  • New Maps! Expanding Fronts provides players with over 40 new Random Map scripts, based on various worlds from the Star Wars universe. Over 100 new terrain options, native buildings that provide benefits when captured, and enhanced scripting capabilities make these settings more unique than anything ever seen before in GB. From the wastelands of Jakku to the snow-tipped peaks of Alderaan; the galaxy is yours to conquer!

  • Bigger Battles! Expanding Fronts greatly extends the maximum population limit, allowing players to field massive armies of up to 1,000 units! In addition, the maximum map size for skirmish games and scenarios has been increased, with experimental options ranging up to 640x640 tiles - over twice the size of the default Giant map!

  • Enhanced Scenario Editor! The barriers of the editor have been shattered with countless new enhancements. Off-grid object placement, new terrains, hundreds of added props, and completely new trigger conditions and effects make designing complex scenarios and campaigns easier than ever before!

  • Performance and Stability Improvements! Widescreen/Windowed mode support, increased framerate, and numerous user customization options allow GB to run on modern systems with ease.

    Can I help?
Expanding Fronts is always looking for new helpers! We are currently in need of:

  • Concept artists to help us visualize units and structures for planned new civilizations.

  • Skilled 3D artists who can create, animate, and render infantry, animals, structures, and vehicles.

  • AI scripters to help ensure computer players know how to make effective use of all of the new units, techs, and features.

  • Writers and Scenario Designers to help us create new campaigns, as well as single and multiplayer scenarios that demonstrate the many new features Expanding Fronts brings to Battlegrounds.

    A few terrain suggestions...

    Sludge
Murky green-yellow water and/or chemicals. Perfect for the polluted waters of Honoghr or the steaming puddles in the Kessel mines.

    Contaminated Rock
Brownish stone covered in neon yellow residue. Another fitting terrain for Honoghr and Kessel's mines.

    Plasma
Clouds of charged gas available in several colors.

I noticed something odd with the AI on the "Starkiller Base" map. The AI starts on normal and builds like it normally does, but shortly after it begins to stop building anything, it only built 1 troop center, 1 food processing center, and then at most 3 farms and then several houses, but they stop collecting carbon, then they have most of their workers collecting nova and ore, and without the processing centers. Then after they had collected all the nova on that starting location they all stop and stand idle. If they proceed to tech level 2, they build walls like normal, but still do nothing after.

Not sure why, because it doesn't do that on any other map that I've noticed. Oh and if it's of any help I was playing against a medium/normal difficulty AI.

Question about the rebel allianace's "astromech repair" technology.

it states that it allows all airbase units to automatically repair themselves. but rebel bombers don't repair themselves? even though they are an airbase unit. is this intended? or a bug?

also, cargo freighters (the flying ones) can be attacked by neutral monsters that are on the ground, even though they are an air unit.

I was wondering, what do I have to do to make, say, a Jawa inside a command center from game start. I have followed all of the tutorials I can find, but no matter what I do in Advanced Genie editor, I can't make units in whichever building I want in a standard game. Just wondering what steps I should take. Thanks! I'm brand new at this and super excited to learn!

    STATUS REPORT

Although we've been somewhat quiet on official channels, the Expanding Fronts team has been hard at work preparing for our next major update, which we are hoping to get done before the end of summer. Included so far are performance and stability upgrades, especially in regards to multiplayer games. Also included will be an update to the game's 256 color palette. This switch will allow us to achieve higher-quality visuals for units, objects, and terrains featuring certain color shades - particularly red, purple, and aqua.

An upgraded color palette allows for a more crisp and diverse selection of new colors

    PAVING THE WAY FORWARD

One of our most significant additions to the Scenario Editor is multiple new terrain options. We now have over 100 new paintable terrains, including additional tree and carbon rock variants, allowing designers to create much more diverse and realistic environments in their scenarios. These terrains can also be used in custom Random Map scripts, allowing for limitless map-making potential. We've made good use of these terrains, plus the countless new props we've added to the Editor in our planned new campaigns, the first of which we are ready to reveal today: The Liberation of Naboo.

A sample image featuring a small handful of over 100 new terrains.

    THE LIBERATION OF NABOO

Word of the destruction of the Second Death Star and the death of Emperor Palpatine has spread rapidly across the galaxy. On the tranquil world of Naboo - the Emperor’s homeworld - the populace has launched a surprise uprising. Taking advantage of the galaxy-wide confusion and panic across the Empire’s ranks, mass celebrations have erupted as thousands of citizens flood the streets of the capital city of Theed.

However, the festivities are short-lived. After recovering from the momentary shock, a vengeful Imperial force storms Theed, sending the crowd into a panic. Many citizens scatter, fleeing Theed for the outlying towns and swamps under the cover of the ill-equipped Naboo Security Forces.

This momentary spark of insurrection and the efforts of scattered ragtag resistance cells will not be enough to free Naboo from the Empire's grip. It will take an army - a Grand Army...

    An Imperial-occupied Naboo village.

The Liberation of Naboo is a dual-civ campaign. You will play as both the Naboo and Gungans in an alternating chain of missions, with the ultimate goal to free Naboo from the Empire's grip once and for all. Captain Gavyn Sykes, an aging veteran of the Trade Federation invasion decades ago, takes the reins of the Naboo Royal Security Forces in a planet-spanning campaign to destabilize the Empire's presence.

Meanwhile, deep in the Naboo swamps, Captain Naz Gegra seeks to reunite the scattered and disenfranchised elements of the Gungan Grand Army. With only a small handful of volunteers at his side, Captain Gegra fights an uphill battle to rebuild the once-powerful Gungan military, and drive the Empire's war machines off of Naboo for good.

The Gungan/Naboo campaign takes places across a myriad of locations both on Naboo and in the space around it. In addition to Naboo's city streets, rolling plains, and dense swamps, players can expect to visit some of the lesser-known locales of the Naboo system, including frigid polar mountain ranges, the lush moons of Ohma-D'un and Rori, and the hostile prison and mining colonies of Storm.

    Otoh Mandassa under Imperial rule.

    DESIGNING A CAMPAIGN

The new enhancements to Expanding Front's Scenario Editor make designing lengthy cutscenes, complex RPG mechanics, and mind-bending puzzles much easier than ever before. However, we've opted to follow in the footsteps set by the original game, and by extension, Age of Empires II and its various expansions. The key to our design process is to ask ourselves - 'What would LucasArts/Ensemble have built if they had Expanding Fronts?' As such, we're using a somewhat minimalist approach that mimics the design styles of the classic campaigns - with some modern updates and new gameplay mechanics to show off the capabilities of our improved editing tools.

Citizens celebrate on the streets of Theed.

    TELLING STORIES THROUGH TERRAIN

The scope of Star Wars, plus the capabilities of the Scenario Editor give us unlimited potential for crafting new stories. Our goals for the new maps - beyond simply looking good - is to provide an unparalleled gameplay experience through keen level design and environmental storytelling.

With our new tools, we can craft more immersive worlds through the use of the map layout itself. We'll be showing a handful of examples from one of the upcoming campaign maps below. The map in question was originally featured in Galactic Battlegrounds' Gungan campaign and has been adapted as a key setpiece location for the first of our new campaigns.

A forgotten waterside arch marks the border between the troubles of Naboo's past and present.

    REVISITING THE PAST

Sharp-eyed players may recognize the elements of the original map, here notably overgrown after 30 years of neglect. So thorough was the Trade Federation's destruction of the once-bustling spaceport, that the Naboo government has largely abandoned any recovery efforts. When the Imperial occupation arrived years later, the abandoned space was deemed ideal for a staging ground and logistics base.

    Waterside defenses.

The Imperials have paved over the ruins of the city, transforming it into a lifeless series of landing pads and supply depots that form a cancerous mark across the otherwise lush waterways and forests.

Elsewhere, the scars of the Trade Federation's invasion are still visible. Overgrown droid and vehicle carcasses speckle the forests where their prison camps once occupied, serving as ghostly reminders of the horrors the Naboo people faced even before the Empire.

Abandoned Trade Federation ruins mar the Naboo countryside and woodlands.

The Liberation of Naboo is one of the numerous campaigns we have in the works. Our team has spared no expense in ensuring that every stage, trigger, and map element are tailored to provide a unique, challenging, and fun experience for our players, while at the same time staying true to the spirit of the original campaign designs. We have many plans for the future, and we'd like to get them built and onto your screens as quickly as possible. Until then, we'd like to once again express our thanks and appreciation of our followers.

    Now enlisting new recruits!

    HELP WANTED

Our plans for expanding fronts don't stop with what we've done. We have new campaigns, new units, and entirely new civilizations on our to-do list, but we need YOUR help to make them possible. We are currently looking for:

  • Concept Artists - We are looking for skilled concept artists to help us visualize and design structures, characters, and vehicles for our planned new civilizations. The more art we have, the better our modelers can put new in-game art assets together. Battlegrounds, like Age of Empires before it, uses a very distinct set of visual qualities for its architecture. Just by looking at a building, you can immediately tell what type of structure it is, what civilization it belongs to, and how far down the Tech tree they've advanced. We need artists that can meet those criteria with new and interesting designs for the new content we have planned. In addition to this, we will also need designs for new infantry, droids, tanks, spacecraft, boats, and artillery where pre-existing canon designs aren't available.

  • 3D Artists and Animators - Modelers are responsible for bringing our new planned new units to life. The requirements to help us out aren't very demanding, amateurs are certainly welcome to lend a hand. Because SWGB is a sprite-based game, the amount of detail we need on infantry models and animations is not particularly high, as can be seen in official renders of the original art. Most units have five main animation sequences: Standing, Walking, Attacking, Dying, and Decaying. Special units like Jedi and Workers have additional sequences such as using force powers or gathering resources. Generally, all of these animations are rather simple, typically ranging from 8-16 frames each.

Technical knowledge of SWGB or AoK modding is certainly welcomed, but not necessary; we can handle most of that on our end. All that's required is a program capable of orthographic/parallel projection, and the ability to render the needed animations as a series of 2D images (using the correct camera/lighting setup for Battlegrounds) that we can convert into in-game sprites.

  • AI Scripters - Scripters teach the game's AI how to play the game. We need scripters capable of writing new strategies for the computer players that take advantage of the many new units, buildings, technologies, and gameplay elements available to players in Expanding Fronts. Scripters will also help to write scripts for new campaign levels. Anybody interested in learning AI scripting can take a look at the Computer Player Strategy Builder Guide for more details about the AI process.

  • Writers and Scenario Designers - We are looking for users skilled in the use of the Scenario Editor, as well as talented creative writers to help us craft our planned new campaigns. Our designers should have a good eye for map design and trigger use.

If you or anybody you know has the skills and would like to contribute to the Expanding Fronts project, please let us know. You can get in touch with us here, or on our Discord server.

    LONG HAVE WE WAITED

The story of the Expanding Fronts mod is one that stretches back over 12 years, to our small community right here at HeavenGames. It can trace its beginnings back to a user named Sarthos, and his modding project the 'Uber Mod;' a compilation of various individual mods uploaded to Galactic Battlegrounds Heaven across nearly a decade of the site's history. At the time, the ability to add new units and objects to the game rather than simply replacing existing assets was considered a rather groundbreaking achievement. Thanks to the efforts of GBH users - particularly Sarthos, Rossk, and SidiousInvader, the seeds for what would eventually become the mod we see today were planted.

In 2011, a small gathering of GBH members, including Sarthos, Orrion Carn, Rossk, and myself (Gen_Rhys_Dallows), decided to come together and try to expand on what the Uber Mod initially did. We strived to not only add even more new content to the game but to essentially rebuild it by allowing many of the new units to be used during typical gameplay. We presented our initial ideas and work in a thread simply titled 'Somebody must want this."

    SOMEBODY MUST WANT THIS

It wasn't until almost a year later when the project finally had a name; Expanding Fronts, and was officially posted to HeavenGames and ModDB. The rest speaks for itself. Our small team has since inflated to include nearly two dozen talented modders and countless contributors. Thanks to the skills of these volunteers, both past and present, Expanding Fronts has accomplished things previously thought impossible. New, fully-functional playable civilizations, increased framerate, widescreen support, new terrains, and larger map sizes make Expanding Fronts the definitive Galactic Battlegrounds experience. But we're not done yet.

A NEW ERA IS UPON US

The team is incredibly excited to announce that two new playable civilizations will be coming to Expanding Fronts very soon. In the not too distant future, Players will be able to bring forth the technological might of the First Order and use the cunning of the Resistance to outrun, outmaneuver, and outsmart opponents.

The First Order is a ruthless powerhouse of a civilization. Their technology tree and bonuses are tailored to allow them to advance through technology levels at a faster rate than other civilizations, where they gain access to a variety of devastating combat bonuses tailored to quickly annihilate any opposing forces with ease.

The Resistance is a very unique civilization with a gameplay style intended to center around stealth, sabotage, and espionage. Their specialized traits allow them to carefully observe and avoid enemy forces before crippling the opposition with lightning-fast raids. When fighting on the defensive, they make up for their lack of brute strength with an uncanny ability to reposition forces and bounce back from near-certain defeat.

    COMING SOON

Unfortunately, due to many life circumstances across the team, we cannot give a reliable date as to when the next update will be publicly available, but we are shooting for sometime in January. We'll reveal more about the new civilizations, as well as our upcoming campaigns and other new elements as we draw closer to their release. In the meantime, we would like to once again express our thanks to all of our players for your continued love and support, and our various contributors for your endless efforts to make Expanding Fronts the best mod that it can be. We never thought from our scatterbrained ideas over a decade ago on a forum with only a handful of active members that we would achieve even a fraction of the success that we have today.

    I'm looking forward to this.

    ---

Some things regarding another unit update for the Galactic Republic to go along with the fighter overhaul...

The TX-130 Saber is officially canon again thanks to Battlefront 2. I'm still in favor of including it as the Mech Destroyer alongside the AT-AP as the Heavy Mech Destroyer.

I also think the HAVw A6 would be good as a new Heavy Assault Mech model for a bit more variety in unit appearances. The basic Juggernaut Turbo Tank model is already in the mod, so it could be used under a different name and with proper Hvy Assault Mech balancing.

As a side note, should Repeater Troopers in general be redesigned? I think the Zann Consortium model has it right: a hip-fired heavy machine blaster as opposed to a giant E-WEB-style gun on a hefty tripod.

    ---

I also thought more about the Black Sun as a faction that would save a bit of space where unit assets are concerned...

Almost all Troop Center units would be shared with the ZC since they're all generic mercenaries, but the Heavy Troopers would be Black Sun Guards with their fancy armor and double-barreled blasters, and the Mounted Troopers would be Mustafarian Flea Riders.

Almost all Airbase units would be shared with the ZC since things like the StarViper (fighter) and Rihkxyrk (attacker) were originally Black Sun equipment, and the Skipray is simply Republic/Imperial surplus used by pirates in general. However, the Air Transport would be the Gozanti-Class and the Interceptor would be the Kihraxz. I could still maybe see the fighter series going CloakShape, Vaksai, Supa, but it isn't totally necessary.

I mean, the entire faction isn't totally necessary... I just want it.

    Other assets shared with ZC:
    - Workers
    - Artillery
    - Pummels
    - Cannons
    - All Shipyard Units

    ALMOST THERE

It's been a busy few months for the Expanding Fronts team. About 75% of all visual assets for the new First Order and Resistance civilizations are complete. Unfortunately, we were not quite able to meet our launch goal for January, but we are not far off. While we still have not established an exact date, we can say with confidence that the new version of Expanding Fronts should be available sometime in February; early March at the absolute latest. We're sorry for the delay and we hope to get this new content into your hands as soon as possible. In the meantime, we are finally ready to reveal more information about the new civilizations and their traits!

Important Note: The mechanics of these new factions are still a work in progress, so this overview may not be entirely accurate to what is released.

    FACTION OVERVIEW - FIRST ORDER

The New Republic’s rise reduced the once-mighty Empire to a rump state hemmed in by strict disarmament treaties and punishing reparations. But in the galaxy’s Unknown Regions, former Imperial officers, nobles, and technologists plotted a return to power. This movement evolved into the First Order, ruled by Supreme Leader Snoke, and is now ready to reclaim the Imperial legacy.

The First Order is a technological powerhouse, relying on advanced weapons backing scores of stormtroopers. A powerful booming-focused faction, the First Order excels at gathering resources and quickly advancing through the Tech Levels, where they gain access to devastating siege weapons and bonuses. If left to their own devices, the First Order can shred through base structures and defenses with ease.

They are less skilled at fighting protracted wars against enemy armies. Their early-mid game advantages fade quickly, and their mechs, ships, and aircraft will become outpaced by enemy forces, though their infantry units remain powerful contenders on the battlefield.

    CIV TRAITS:

    Infantry and Siege civilization

  • Workers carry +5 resources
  • No buildings are required to construct other buildings/units or to advance Tech Levels
  • Troop Center technologies cost 25% less
  • Mounted Troopers are replaced by Flametroopers. They do not require an Animal Nursery to train but move slower.
  • Fortresses attack 10% faster
  • (Team) Research Centers work 30% faster

    UNIQUE UNIT:

Jet Trooper - (Fortress) Agile infantry units equipped with jetpacks, First Order Jet Troopers can effortlessly traverse terrains that other land units cannot, allowing them to launch surprise attacks from any direction using their deadly explosive projectile launchers.

    UNIQUE TECHS:

Indoctrination - (Fortress) Infantry units attack 15% faster. Affects Troop Center units, Bounty Hunters, and Jet Troopers

Advanced Torpedoes - (Research Center) Anti-Air missiles travel 20% faster; Anti-Air missile units and structures gain +1 Range and Sight.

Auxiliary Power Cells - (Mech Factory) Assault Mechs gain a secondary siege cannon attack

Conflagrine-14 - (Troop Center) Flametroopers gain +1 Range; Attacks cause targets to suffer additional bleed damage after the attack ends

    FACTION OVERVIEW - RESISTANCE

A small, secretive private military force, the Resistance was founded by Rebellion hero Leia Organa to monitor the actions of the First Order. Most New Republic power brokers tolerate the Resistance while regarding Organa and her fighters as dead-enders with an unfortunate fixation on the past. Organa’s cash-strapped movement relies on credits, ships, and equipment quietly funneled to it from the few senators who share her concerns.

The Resistance is intended to be a very resilient faction centered around stealth, mobility, and air superiority. While they are generally mediocre at frontline fighting, the Resistance is very good at bouncing back from near-certain defeat, as well as repositioning forces and resources at a moment’s notice to conduct devastating hit-and-fade attacks.

    CIV TRAITS:

    Air and Stealth civilization

  • Airbase technologies cost 20% less
  • Airbase military units move 5% faster
  • A Nova Stockpile is created at every newly built Command Center
  • Workers move 10% faster; conduct repairs 2x faster
  • Fortresses generate Power for nearby structures
  • (Team) Scouts and Fighters gain +1 Sight
  • (Team) Hutt Endorsement available automatically

    UNIQUE UNIT:

Ski Speeder - (Fortress) Low-altitude speeders that pre-date even the Rebellion. Ski Speeders are nimble, low-cost vehicles that can chase down enemies before attacking with light rapid-fire blasters. Effective mainly against siege weapons, but capable of engaging other threats when massed.

    UNIQUE TECHS:

Supply Lines - (Spaceport) Cargo Hovercrafts and Freighters gain self-shielding

Sensor Cloak - (War Center) Air Transports gain stealth capabilities

Bunker Busters - (Airbase) Bombers gain +5 Attack in general, and a +45 bonus against Defensive Structures

Resilience - (Fortress) Lost Prefab Shelters, Command Centers and Forts do not reduce population headroom

    THANKS AGAIN

The Expanding Fronts team once again wishes to express our sincere thanks to those who have followed our progress over the years, and for their continued patience as we put the finishing touches on our new civilizations. We wish everybody a Happy New Year.

Added https://swgb.fandom.com/wiki/Expanding_Fronts to wikia. Sadly we can't add subarticles of the mod.

Feel free to modify and add content.

As I said in Moddb, the Resistance and First Orders seems so well designed (at least in the paper), and have a lot of identity. Wouldn't be cool to modify original civs to make them more unique?

It would be nice if factions could build more of their unique units in standard games. The Republic's Hvy Weapons Factory could produce HAVw A6 Juggernauts as extra-large assault vehicles and other things like that. Maybe a new building type for special forces?

Also, another quick brainstorm for Imperial splinter cell units and heroes:

    Zsinj's Empire
    - Warlord Zsinj
    - General Melvar
    - Lanu Pasiq
    - Teubbo the Hutt
    - Tuzin Gast
    - Raptor Trooper
    - TIE Raptor
    - Y-4 Raptor Transport

    Pentastar Alignment
    - Grand Moff Ardus Kaine
    - Jerec
    - Sariss
    - Boc Aseca
    - Maw
    - The Twins
    - Yun

    Other
    - AQ-5 Waveskimmer
    - Swift Assault 5 (can traverse both land and water)
    - HAVt B5 Juggernaut
    - TIE/gt
    - TIE/rb
    - Imperial Army Trooper

Cant find any information regarding the widescreen support. I just installed the mod, checked enable resolution patch and chose 1920x1080. When I get in game, the screen is bunched up, clearly not in widescreen. I also disabled the display scaling on high dpi.

Is there a known fix that I missed?

Been having the same problem, but only in the main menu. The actual map and scenario screens are fine.

Any chance you guys can give us a few views of the architecture for the new factions? Something along the lines of this?

This was an awesome spread of the Zann buildings.

Make sure that the in-game resolution in the options menu is set to the highest available setting.

We'll post a full layout once all of the buildings have been completed.

I think the factions after the First Order and Resistance that should be prioritized are the Mandalorians and the CorpSec Authority.

The CorpSec Authority has units to fill almost every role in the roster (as I planned out in my "Brainstorming Factions" thread), but the Mandalorians have a few gaps.
