The RPG Calendar

Announcements

The RPG Calendar is closing down. Thanks for the good times guys.

DarkBeing and Melkor have completed their Fanfic based on the legendary Advent of Darkness RPG: The Advent of Darkness FanFiction

DarkBeing's Legacy: The History of the SWU RPG

FoO presents the Calendar's first offical, and rather silly, awards ceremony. It is now over, but I'll leave this here so you can chack out the winners if you missed it. Go on, have a look'see...

WARNING: Exam Season, RPGs may move slowly.

What is the Calendar? How does it work?

The Calendar is basically a floodgate. It is here to stop tirades of RPG's flooding the forum, then dieing, then there being a period where no RPG's exist.

To this end the calendar exists. When you come up with an RPG idea you submit it, then when enough have said that they're interested you go on the waiting list until there is a slot and then the RPG can begin!

How do I submit my RPG?

To submit an RPG to the community fill in this simple form

RPG Name: (The title of your RPG)
Moderator: (Your forum name)
Plot: (The plot for your RPG, this could be your title crawl)
Character/Faction Based: (Just put down character, faction or either if you haven't decided)
Number of people interested: (I'll fill this in as we go along. This field will be deleted when your RPG has reached 5 people)

Are there any rules?

Yes, these rules are not subject to change, but most are common sense anyway

-Follow the CoC, no spam, flaming, baiting etc.

-Constructive criticism only, don't just say 'I hate your idea', say how to improve it

-Don't just ignore the calendar, it's here for a reason

-Keep it friendly, and say if you're interested

-If you have a problem contact me, my email is friend_of_old@hotmail.co.uk

-To make things easier to run here I have introduced a colour coding system for important posts
Type RPG Idea... in Bold Red if you are submitting an idea
Type Interested in... in Bold Lime if you are interested in an idea
Type Update for... in Bold Orange if you want me to update something on the main post
Type Probation for... in Bold Yellow if you want me to put someone on the probation list (I will ask for reasons)

How many...

Yes there are limits to things:

-There will only be 5 RPG's at a time

-You need 5 people to be interested in your RPG for it to go forward

-You can have up to 3 RPG ideas at a time

-You can moderate 1 RPG at a time

RPG Name: A New Empire Part 2
Moderator: Gorog
Plot:
Two years have passed since the Battle of Endor. Imperial commanders and Moffs break away from High Command on Coruscant, while the remaining loyalists struggle to keep the forces of the Alliance of Free Planets at bay. However, while having a wide base of support, the former Rebellion lacks the military resources to take Coruscant.

In a surprise move, Alliance and Imperial leaders meet on the planet ITHOR. Drawing up a peace treaty, the delegates decide on a new government, transforming the Empire into a constitutional monarchy with the reinstatement of the IMPERIAL SENATE, led by a President appointed by the figurehead Emperor who has been elected by the Grand Moffs. MON MOTHMA is soon appointed to the post of President of the Imperial Senate.

However, some former Rebels refuse to recognize the Treaty of Ithor, and accuse Mon Mothma of having sold out the ideals of the Rebellion to assume control of the galaxy. These Rebels maintain arms in order to establish a true Republic. Similarly, some Imperial worlds denounce what they call a false Empire, and instead aid the Imperial warlords. As the new Empire and its Senate try to establish authority, the Galactic Civil War enters a new phase, manipulated by shadowy individuals with their own agenda...
Character/Faction Based: Character

RPG Name: Age of the Warlords
Moderator: FoO

[c]After the disasterous failure of Palpatine's attempted formation of a unified Galactic Empire the Republic collapsed and the galaxy fell into ten years of darkness. Over all of this the Church of Truth holds sway, binding the planets of the galaxy under its vicious doctorine. However one team of Directorate scientists on Kuat dare to defy them. In an attempt to create the ultimate weapon they unleash the ultimate sin, they unleash the Force.

RPGs to be Approved

Moderators

I've decided to add this section so that people can see at a glance if their favourite moderators or friends are planning an RPG at a glance, or if they're on the probation list. Thus I'm assigning everyone a colour, if you'd prefer a different colour don't hesitate to ask.

Probation List

This is where a list of people and their crimes are put. If you are on this list it means something you have done has been deemed counter-productive to an RPG or the RPG community. Being on this list does not stop you creating RPG's through the calendar or playing in them. It is here to warn people of what you have done, so that if they don't want to run the risk of you messing something up half-way through.

Crimes include things like godmodding, flaming, spamming, quitting for no valid reason, etc. Basically anything that harms an RPG.

Darth Kiev: For abandoning ANE without reason, causing death of the RPG.

*cough*

As for the Rping court idea, I think that most of those issues can be handled by a moderator. The OOC thread idea might work, but I'm not sure if there's enough activity to keep that going.

On another note, how would people here feel about a non-SW RPG. I've had an idea for a while now, and this seems as good a time as any. I realize we'd have to have it in MEC, but it could be added to the calendar and such. Any thoughts?

Yeah, DB, but I tried that with the original Old Republic and it didn't stick. I think people are just too set in their ways here. The purpose of the moderator, in addition to driving the story along, is to handle those little disputes that arise. I would say he should only call on the community at large if the disagreement is too big for him to handle on his own. Likewise, I would too find it annoying to have an organized system apart from the RPG itself dictating what happens in my thread. More often than not, the individuals are capable enough to handle the disagreement themselves, usually via e-mail or a messenger system like AIM.

The biggest issue is how much organization do we really want here in SWU? I think past experience has proven that the Calendar is about the extent we can handle before people start rioting.

FoO, could you please remove the other RPGs under my name? They're no longer on the table, so to speak.

RPG Name: Rise of the UnderCity
Moderator: Cheapy the Hutt
Plot:

It is a time of relative peace in the galaxy. During the aftermath of the Sith War led by Exar Kun and his Sith followers, the Old Republic licks its wounds and concentrates on recovering from the losses of the devastating war.

But meanwhile, not everyone in the galaxy is idle. On the remote planet of Arkania, a lone science ship carrying a mysterious cargo takes off, bound for Coruscant. However, a freak malfunction in the freighter's navicomputer causes it to veer off course-straight towards the city world of Taris.

Drawn in by the planet's gravity, the cargo vessel crashes in the deepest reaches of the planet, known as the UnderCity. Home to criminals and prisoners of past wars, it is a dark, haunting place, where few venture willingly. But, unbeknownst to the population at large, something has awakened in the burning wreckage of the ship that crashed.

And it is hungry...

I understand everyone's concerns here about creating an RP'ing court, but here me out. This will not be a resurrection of the Imperial Legion, reshaped to glorify myself. To address Melkor's concerns, that is why the court will act only when called upon by a moderator or by a certain number of RP'ers. The court would have no authority to force its judgement when uncalled for. This system would work particularly well if a moderator was absent while the RPG continued, and a dispute arose that the RP'ers involved could not settle by themselves. Best of all, the court's magistrates would be elected by the community of RP'ers, and would only serve terms of two months. So I would merely be the moderator of this thread, unless I was elected as a magistrate.

Bando, I'm not sure if we really need such a court. Like Melkor said, pretty much all of that can be handled by a moderator, and only a grossly negligent moderator would go absent on an RPG.

Or Bigglesworth/Austin Powers. He managed to get himself banned twice whilst moderationg an RPG.

By thee way, what I meant was I'd let all of those RPG's start anyway, make an exeption. So if Billy feels he can handle 2 RPG's at once he's welcome to this time, however he is just as welcome to delay KotOR.

Tell the truth I believe I started a 'court system' back in the dying days of the IL, a period of time I'd rather forget, and it died pretty quickly. On the other hand if such a situation did arise you are welcome to come to the clendar and ask for my, or the whole community's opinion on the issue. Just an offer .

Well, only if the community supports the idea. Just as a sidenote, I actually think the IL was a good idea, and would have worked in an ideal world. Fact is, however, people don't like feeling controlled. The IL did get things done. After all, without it, we wouldn't even have this calendar.

The Calendar was an act of the IL, I believe.

Also, I agree the IL in principle was a good idea, but given certain factors proved impractical. This forum is just too small to have a much more complex governance than forummers and moderators. As I've said before, I think the calendar is about the most regulation most people can handle. No one wanted to give over authority directly to a body that inherently placed forummers, not staffers, in a position of power over the others. But Persia meant only good for SWU in creating it, so perhaps he should receive appreciation for that dedication, if not the application of the idea. (Note, I refused to join IL myself. )

Indeed IL did create the calendar, and was good in principal. However, from what I saw it fell because one group of forummers, lead by Xaph I believe, were determined to destroy it, and the two determined to make it work, Persia and myself, were too hard headed to concede any ground.

And if I heard correctly the fall of CF had something to do with it as well.

But the legion is all in the past, and will be staying there.

EDIT: And of course it had rather an inappropriate name...
Also Melkor almost did something like it once with the Crusade for commas, although in the end that turned out to just be something to put in your sig.

Actually, that was the whole point of it. One day, I was just sitting around, and the alliteration just popped into my head and I thought, wow wouldn't it be cool to have an RP group called the Crusade for Commas? I had no ideas of what it would be going into it other than it would have a kick ass name.

I am very dismayed by the lack of RP'ers here. I think we need to do something to attract more. A petition to the mods to "revamp" the site, so to speak? Make it more attractive to outsiders? Or have those RP'ers who RP off-site as well (hint, hint, nudge, nudge, Cheapy) put a link in their sigs to this site?

I did plead for help at VIII, but nobody would come and take up a few characters.

I also won't be starting KOTOR II. I mean, six people signed up. Nobody took any party members, or even the Exile!

As I mentioned before I'm thinking of holding an MEC RPG. Here's the official proposal.

RPG Name: Man and Olympian RPG
Moderator: Maegereg
Plot:

The Orion arm is under strain. In the nine-thousand years since Neil Armstrong, Humanity has reached the stars. Beginning with the development of the Armstrong drive and the lost colony of Margolia, it was only a matter of time until we discovered another alien race. These aliens, the Ashiyuur, were not exactly what might have been hoped. Since first contact, both have uneasily spread along a large border. The two species have not yet reached the stage of a house on fire. But one spark could set it aflame.

The small colony of Imarios was on a world governed by the Ashiyuur. It was the leading symbol of the fact that Humans and Ashiyuur could get along. And then the colony revolted against the Ashiyuur. As they moved to swiftly quell the rebellion, the nearby world of Cormoral declared allegiance the the rebels. The war had begun. But soon the colony was destroyed, and Cormoral under heavy siege from the combined Ashiyuurean fleets. With no central government, humanity sat and collectively tried to look at something else.

The planet Cormoral is nearly defeated. And then the word goes out. The Citizens of Dellaconda, another frontier world have pledged their support. With much fanfare they dispatch their fleet of twenty-odd frigates, led by the greatest military mind they could muster. He is a schoolteacher. And his name is Christopher Sim.

Although he is alone and outnumbered, there is still hope for Christopher Sim. He has some of the best minds of all humanity including the great scientist Rashim Machesney supporting his cause. And while he fights, his Brother Tarieen is engaged in a desperate struggle to unite the reluctant human worlds into a confederacy that can stop the Ashiyuur once and for all.

I'm glad you're both interested. I'm planning on providing more detail on weapons, tech, etc in the sign-ups, but to answer your question Pacifica, it's sort of similar to hyperspace- it transports you into an alternate space and back (so you need to make two jumps on every trip). In the alternate space you travel faster than light (while seeming only to drift slowly along through an endless grey mist), but it's still painfully slow compared to SW hyperspace. It's also incredibly inaccurate on re-entry points, so half a flight can be flying to your destination at sublight speed after your jump).

And yes, this is based on the book "A Talent for War" by Jack Mcdevitt (try looking it up on wikipedia).

Just a bit more background for those who are interested:
The Ashiyuur are totally unused to human style fighting (they just line up on a battle field and attack each other- a highly ritualized form of combat). They're at about the same tech level as humans (even though their civ is much older). And yes, the humans have one other advantage which I'll go into in more detail later (hint: I mentioned how back the drives were, right?).

Edit: I've added on a little to the plot description. There's some stuff that I've decided needs to get in.
